The outdoor unit ships charged with enough refrigerant for the precharge length. Runs beyond it need refrigerant added per the installation manual, and no run should exceed the maximum.

What a mini split install involves

An overview so you know what to expect and what to ask your installer. The installation manual is the authority for your model, and the delivery and installation guide covers the pallet delivery.

Mount the indoor unit
Fix the mounting plate level on the wall, with clearance above and to the sides for airflow and service.

Drill the wall penetration
One hole, sloped slightly down to the outside so condensate drains out. The included wall sleeve lines it.

Set the outdoor unit
On a level pad, stand or bracket, raised above the ground and snow line, with open space around the coil.

Connect the line set
Route the insulated copper, drain and interconnect cable together. Flare connections are torqued to the manual's values.

Pressure test and evacuate
Nitrogen pressure test for leaks, then vacuum the lines down to the micron level in the manual before any refrigerant is released.

Power, open valves, test
Wire the dedicated circuit and disconnect, open the service valves, then test cooling, heating and drainage.

Can I install a Classic America mini split myself?

A licensed HVAC install is recommended. The job involves refrigerant connections, a vacuum and pressure test, and a dedicated electrical circuit. Handy owners often do the mounting and drilling themselves and have a technician make the connections, evacuate and commission the system. See installation and care and the video library for what each step looks like.

What if my line set run is longer than the included kit?

You need a longer line set of the same sizes. Up to the precharge length no refrigerant is added; beyond it, refrigerant is added per the manual, up to the model's maximum run. The table above lists each model's limits.

Does a mini split need its own circuit?

Yes. Each system should be on a dedicated circuit sized to the nameplate and manual, with an outdoor disconnect where local code requires it. The 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models run on 115V; the 23,000 BTU and DUET need 208 to 230V.

How is the condensate drained?

By gravity through the drain hose that runs out with the line set, which is why the wall hole slopes down to the outside. Where it cannot drain downhill, such as an interior wall, a condensate pump is added.

What arrives in the box?

The indoor unit, outdoor unit and installation kit arrive together on one pallet: insulated copper line set, power and interconnect cables, pipe wrap, wall sleeve and remote. Inspect the delivery before you sign for it, then register your warranty within 60 days of installation for the bonus remote.

How much does mini split installation cost?

The system price is on each product page (equipment only). Labor for ductless mini split installation — electrical, flares, vacuum, commissioning, pad/bracket, permits — varies by region and site.
