What size mini split AC do I need?
It depends on square footage, ceiling height, insulation, and sun exposure. Published coverage, from the ENERGY STAR room-sizing chart maxima, is up to 400 sq ft for 9,000 BTU, up to 550 sq ft for both 12,000 BTU systems, up to 1,400 sq ft for 23,000 BTU, and 2 rooms, up to 400 sq ft each for DUET. What is a ductless mini split system?
A ductless mini split is an inverter heat-pump system with an outdoor compressor and one or more wall-mounted indoor units connected by a refrigerant line set—no ductwork required. Classic America systems cool in summer and heat in winter. The 23,000 BTU system uses the Tuya app and the included remote. Every other model adds Amazon Alexa on top of the Tuya app and the remote.
Can I install a DIY mini split myself?
Many homeowners mount the indoor unit, run the line set, and hang the outdoor unit. Refrigerant connections and electrical work should be done by a licensed HVAC professional. See our delivery & installation guide and install planner for what's included and what to plan for.
